Undergraduate Programs - Suggested Sequence of Courses

Early Childhood Education

  • Freshman Year:
    • Fall: LANG 103; PHIL 201; MATH; ENG 101/105; EDUC 101 (one credit); U.S. History
    • Spring: LANG 104; PHIL 202; MATH; MATH/Science elective PHYS 240 or *ANTH 354; LIT
    • Summer: non-U.S. History
  • Sophomore Year:
    • Fall: TRS 260; PHIL (Area I or II); EDUC 251, 261, 361 (1 or 2 of the 3 courses); ENG 326; MUS 460 (every other year)   
    • Spring: TRS; PHIL (Area I or II); EDUC 251, 261, 361 (1 or 2 of the 3 courses); ANTH 101 or SOC 101
  • Junior Year:
  • Senior Year:

·   This sequence presumes the candidate will begin language study at the intermediate level. If candidate needs to take Lang. 112 or Lang. 101, History and/or Literature could be added to summer coursework.

·    Student Teaching may be completed either semester of the fourth year.

·    Volunteer work in schools is encouraged in the first two years.

*   ANTH 354 is offered every even Spring, that is, ’06, ’08, etc.

Elementary Education

  • Freshman Year:
    • Fall: LANG 103; PHIL 201; U.S. History; MATH; ENG 101/105; EDUC 101
    • Spring: LANG 104; PHIL 202; Literature, MATH;  PHYS 240 (or *ANTH 354 or Physical Geography)
  • Sophomore Year:
    • Fall: TRS 260; PHIL (Area I or II); EDUC 251, 261, 361 (1 or 2 of 3 courses); Chem 125 or 126, ENG 326
    • Spring: TRS; PHIL (Area I or II); ANTH 101 or SOC 101; EDUC 251, 261, 361 (1 or 2 of 3 courses)
  • Junior Year:
  • Senior Year:
    • Fall: EDUC 590, 591, 592, 593
    • Spring: TRS; BIOL 103/104; Literature; Economics; Politics; Art or Drama 

·   This sequence presumes the candidate will begin language study at the intermediate level. If candidate needs to take Lang. 112 or Lang. 101, History and/or Literature could be added to summer coursework.

·    Student Teaching may be completed either semester of the fourth year.

·    Candidates may take only one course in addition to the tutorial EDUC 590 while student teaching.

Secondary Education

Art - (Art Curriculum should be verified with Art Department)

  • Freshman Year: ART 101-102
  • Sophomore Year: ART 201, 202, 211, 212; EDUC 251, 351
  • Junior Year: Art 332; students must have three courses in one of the following three areas: Painting, Sculpture or Digital Arts, and one course in one of the remaining two areas; EDUC 570 or 586
  • Senior Year: ART 231 or 232, 451, 471 or 472, 595; EDUC 597, 598, 599

Biology - (Biology Curriculum should be verified with Biology Department) - Admissions on Hold

Chemistry - (Chemistry Curriculum should be verified with Chemistry Department) - Admissions on Hold

Drama - (Drama Curriculum should be verified with Drama Department)

  • Freshman Year: FREN 203, 204
  • Sophomore Year: FREN 301; EDUC 251, 361
  • Junior Year: FREN 329, 401, 402; two advanced French literature electives; ML 521; EDUC 586
  • Senior Year: FREN 452, 503; one advanced French literature elective; EDUC 597, 598, 599

German - (German Curriculum should be verified with Modern Languages Department)

History - (History Curriculum should be verified with History Department)

  • Freshman Year: HIST 101, 102; EDUC 101; one course in politics
  • Sophomore Year: two history electives; EDUC 251, 361; one course in economics
  • Junior Year: HIST 387, 388; two 300-level history electives; one course in sociology or anthropology; EDUC 586
  • Senior Year: HIST 401; two 300-level history electives; EDUC 582, 585 (offered at GWU), 597, 598, 599

Mathematics - (Math Curriculum should be verified with Math Department)

  • Freshman Year: MATH 121, 122, PHYS 215
  • Sophomore Year: MATH 221, 222, 305; PHYS 216, CSC 104-105 (or CSC 104, 113; or CSC 123, 124); EDUC 251 or 361
  • Junior Year: MATH 501, 505; two courses in probability/ statistics; EDUC 251 or 361, 586
  • Senior Year: MATH 503, 521; one Math elective approved by the department; two Science electives approved by the department; content methods (offered at GWU); EDUC 597, 598, 599

Spanish - (Spanish Curriculum should be verified with Modern Languages Department)

  • Freshman Year: SPAN 203, 204
  • Sophomore Year: SPAN 205, 300, 301 and one survey course (from among 401, 411, 420 or 421, or an Afro-Spanish literature/culture class in the consortium); continue second foreign language; EDUC 251, 361
  • Junior Year: SPAN 310, 311, and one survey course (from among 410, 411, 420 or 421, or an Afro-Spanish literature class in the consortium); ML 521; EDUC 586
  • Senior Year: SPAN 320, 452, and one survey course (from among 410, 411, 420, 421, or an Afro-Spanish literature/culture class); EDUC 597, 598, 599
