PROGRAM OVERVIEW
OUR MISSION: To provide high quality educational opportunities and experiences for educators seeking to increase and enhance their knowledge and skills.
OVERVIEW The Professional Development Workshop & Institutes (PDWI) courses are designed for teachers, counselors, administrators, diagnosticians, psychologists, and other school personnel who wish to obtain graduate level credits for certification, recertification, or continuing education. Courses may also be taken for personal interest.
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT WORKSHOP COURSES ARE NOT APPLICABLE TOWARDS GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS.
The Professional Development Workshops & Institutes work closely with local school districts in Maryland and Virginia to keep abreast of the newest certification requirements in order to ensure that the courses offered meet the needs of educators. However, it is the student’s responsibility to consult with appropriate representatives from their school system or employer to verify that Workshop credits will meet their specific requirements.
PLEASE NOTE THAT PDWI COURSES ARE NOT ACCEPTED BY DCPS FOR PROVISIONAL OR INTITIAL CERTIFICATION.
Our courses are taught by experienced and highly qualified "master teachers" who are experts in their fields, and possess both theoretical and practical educational experience. Our classes offer participants a chance to explore current educational challenges and issues from a multidisciplinary perspective. Classes are open to professional of all disciplines, and emphasize active participation and dialogue in a framework that combines practical concerns and a theoretical base. Using a variety of teaching methods which may include in-class lecture and discussion, field trips, guided research activities, or independent learning activities, PDWI classes provide opportunities for communication and collaboration between professionals in an open, collegial environment.
The Professional Development Workshops and Institutes offer courses in the areas of: Administration; Counseling; English as a Second Language/Foreign Language; Assessment; Classroom Management; Curriculum Development; DC History; Human Development; Instructional Technology; Math: Methodology; Reading; Teaching Methodology for Math; Teaching Methodology for Science; and Special Education.
